Supplement Watch: Krill Oil
One of the first supplements anyone should consider taking is fish oil.
Fish oil has been proven in numerous studies to be beneficial in a wide range of impressive areas.
It can improve mood and cognitive function, decrease systemic inflammation (thus possibly warding off heart disease, asthma, arthritis, macular degeneration, and a host of other diseases or maladies), decrease muscle soreness and inflammation, potentially destroy cancer cells and thwart metastasis, improve cholesterol ratios and levels, and increase insulin sensitivity and metabolism, which is a powerful way to decrease body fat.
Naturally, a supplement that can work with your body to fill dietary shortfalls, improve your health and make you look good naked all in one tidy little package found it’s way on the top of the list of supplements taken by myself and just about anyone in the know.
Now, it just may be that the constant arms race of nutritional science has improved even further on good ol’ fish oil.
Enter krill oil.
Krill contains the same beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids as fish oil, but attached in the same phospholipid form as the cell walls in your body. Fish oil is attached in a triglyceride form.
Krill oil contains two incredibly potent antioxidants: astaxanthin and canthaxin.
Astaxanthin is considered to be one of the most potent antioxidants known to man. It has been studied for its effects on everything from an immune system enhancer to its benefits on eye, skin and heart health. It can even provide excellent protection against UV radiation damage and its powerful antioxidant capacity can help slow the effects of skin aging.
Krill is also high in vitamins A, D and E.
Compared to fish oil, it’s ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorptance Capacity) is 46 times higher.
On top of all that, studies have even found krill oil to be an effective means of symptom reduction in PMS and dysmenorrhea.
It seems that Krill Oil could replace fish oil as the next foundational supplement. I’ll be adding it to my regimen over the next few months tracking the results.
