Knifework: How to Chop Onions

When you’re a busy person trying to get things done efficiently in the kitchen, the little skills and tricks make a big difference.

Onions are common in many dishes, yet chopping them during prep work can become messy, slow and imprecise. We end up hacking the vegetable apart into a bunch of random little chunks – pretty much on the opposite end of the skill spectrum as a real chef.

Yet, it doesn’t have to be tough to do.

In this video, Abby, owner of Barefoot Watertown, explains how to chop onions quickly into uniform pieces without risking your fingers or making a mess.

And here’s the process in pictures:

Chop off one end

Save the end for last, and chop what’s left.
